Carl Pettersson Wins Canadian Open After Record Breaking Round Of 60 In The Third Round.
Monday, 26th July, 2010
Carl Pettersson built on his record-breaking performance in the third round of the RBC Canadian Open to claim a fourth career PGA Tour victory.
He shot a tournament-record ten-under-par 60 in his third round to burst into contention after only just managing to make the cut.
He then finished with a 67 to overhaul third-round leader Dean Wilson and claim the title by a single stroke.
Pettersson said: "I still can't believe I won the tournament. I played very aggressive coming in and that was fun.
"I just love that back nine. It's set up great for me. I guess it was my week this week and I'm just very happy and fortunate that I managed to win."
The Swede even managed to get away with dropping a shot at the final hole after missing a five foot par putt.
Wilson led by four shots heading into the closing round and had increased his advantage over Pettersson to six shots after seven holes.
However, he struggled to make birdies as Petterson mounted his charge and could only register a 72.
Luke Donald carded a fourth sub-70 round to take third, with Matt Kuchar, Charley Hoffman and Tim Clark among the nine players to share fourth spot.
Swedish success was also witnessed on the European Tour, as Richard S Johnson claimed victory in the Nordea Scandinavian Masters.
Johnson became only the second home winner of the event in the last 12 years thanks to a rare moment of success with his golf putter on the final hole, when rolling in a birdie effort from 30 feet.
This proved enough to secure a one-stroke triumph over Rafa Echenique at the Bro Hof Slott Golf Club in Stockholm and hand him a first European Tour win in eight years.
Johnson finished with a one-under-par 71 and admitted that the victory was one of the "sweetest things" he had ever accomplished.
"This is a huge tournament to win for a Swede and I'm speechless. It's epic," he told the European Tour website.
The result could be considered unexpected as Johnson has been out of form with his Scotty Cameron golf putter in the US and had failed to finish in the top 30 of a tournament since February.
Italian Edoardo Molinari continued his fine recent form by following up on victory at the Barclays Scottish Open by taking third.
Louis Oosthuizen failed to make it back-to-back titles after his British Open win as a bad day with his golf driver led to him finishing in a share of fourth.
Meanwhile, joint overnight leader KJ Choi never recovered from hitting his tee shot out of bounds and firing a further two golf balls into water on the 15th for a nine.
