Tiger To Play With Els, Westwood At Pebble Beach

Tuesday, 15th June, 2010

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. -- Top-ranked Tiger Woods begins his quest for a fourth U.S. Open title next Thursday at majestic Pebble Beach Golf Links on the famed Monterey Peninsula.

Woods begins play in the 110th championship at 4:36 p.m. ET off the first tee with Ernie Els of South Africa and Lee Westwood of England. The trio is scheduled to start the second round Friday at 11:06 a.m. off the 10th tee.

The 34-year-old Woods previously won U.S. Open crowns in 2000 at Pebble Beach by a record-breaking 15 strokes, the largest winning total in major championship history; in 2002 at Bethpage State Park (N.Y.); and in 2008 at Torrey Pines Golf Course (Calif.).

This marks the fifth time the tournament has been played at Pebble Beach. Previous winners include Jack Nicklaus in 1972, Tom Watson in 1982, Tom Kite in 1992 and Woods in 2000.

Designed by Jack Neville and Douglas C. Grant, Pebble Beach Golf Links opened in 1919 and has long been regarded as one of the best courses in the world. The par-71 course will play 7,040 yards -- 194 yards longer than it did in 2000.

Fairways will range from 25 to 70 yards in width and average approximately 35 yards. Intermediate rough will average 1.5 inches, followed by a 15-foot band of primary rough at 2 1/2 to 3 inches. Primary rough will average 3 1/4 inches, with the deepest rough set for 4-5 inches. Greens will run at 11 to 11 1/2 on the Stimpmeter.

This year's field of 156 players includes 32 players who participated in the 2000 U.S. Open at Pebble Beach, 21 of whom made the cut. They include Els and Miguel Ángel Jiménez, who tied for second; Westwood and Padraig Harrington, who tied for fifth; and Stewart Cink, David Duval and Vijay Singh, who tied for eighth.
