Furyk Lands Awkward Verizon Heritage Victory

Monday, 19th April, 2010

Furyk lands awkward Verizon Heritage victory.

Jim Furyk bounced back from a shocking performance at the Masters to claim an awkward play-off victory in the Verizon Heritage tournament.

Furyk missed the cut by nine shots at Augusta, but bounced back at Harbour Town Golf Links to gain a second PGA Tour victory in under a month after a recent triumph in the Transitions Championship.

The 39-year-old closed with a two-under-par 69, but this was only good enough to take him into a play-off with Englishman Brian Davis.

However, after missing the green with his approach shot, Davis called himself a two-shot penalty for violating a rule against moving a loose impediment during the takeaway of a swing, when faintly catching a loose reed.

This left Furyk a simple shot with his golf equipment to claim the title.

He said: "To have the tournament come down that way is definitely not the way I want to win the golf tournament. It's obviously a tough loss for him, and I respect and admire what he did.

"It's a testament to our game and the people that play on the tour. To be there, be in the battle and have an opportunity to win the golf tournament, and then have to call a penalty on yourself has got to be extremely disappointing."

Davis gave himself a shot at a first career PGA Tour title when he rolled in an 18 foot putt on the 18th green to force a play-off, which gave him a round of 68.

Luke Donald looked as though he was going to make an assault on the top of the leaderboard on the front nine as he made five birdies in eight holes.

However, he faded to shoot a round of 70 and finish in a share of third with Bo Van Pelt, three shots adrift of Furyk.

Camilo Villegas sporting his Footjoy ICON golf shoes , Ricky Barnes and Rickie Fowler were among those to finish in the top ten.

Meanwhile, YE Yang produced a fine scrambling performance to gain a two-stroke victory in the Volvo China Open on the European Tour.

The South Korean only carded two birdies in a damp final round at the Sukhou Jinji Lake Golf Club, but he maintained his overnight lead to finish clear of Rhys Davies and Stephen Dodd.

Yang is hopeful that the success will make some impact on any doubters that questioned the quality of his game following his victory in the PGA Championship last year.

He told the European Tour website: "There should be some doubters about my game and I know that this win won't abolish all those doubts, but I think it will alleviate me of some of the pressure and unseen pressure those doubters have been throwing at me.

"It was quite important for me to win, but I know I still have to work a lot more."
