Anthony Kim Earns A Place At The Masters With A Win In The Shell Houston Open.

Monday, 5th April, 2010

Anthony Kim opened the door Sunday for Augusta native and former Augusta State golfer Vaughn Taylor to earn a late invitation to the Masters, then slammed it shut with a two-putt par from 28 feet to win the Shell Houston Open on the first hole of sudden death.

Taylor, whose last appearance at his hometown tournament came in 2008, forced the playoff with an 18-hole birdie putt on the final hole at Redstone Golf Club in Humble, Texas. Moments later, Kim missed a six-foot par-saving putt, sending the two players back to the 18th tee.

There, Kim's tee shot found the middle of the fairway, and put his approach 28 feet from the hole. Meanwhile, Taylor replicated Kim's woes from the final hole of regulation, hitting the fairway sand and coming up shot in the greenside bunker. After blasting to 25 feet, Taylor's putt to save par was short and left of the cup.

Kim's win was the third of his career and his first since 2008, when he won the Wachovia Championship (now Quail Hollow Championship) and the AT&T National. Taylor's last victory was at the 2005 Reno-Tahoe Open. Both players finished at 12-under-par 276.

Kim, who shared the third-round lead, cruised to a three-shot lead at 13-under through nine holes, but his bogey at the 10th hole and Taylor's birdie at No. 12 allowed the Augusta native to pull within a shot. Kim then birdied the 12th, but Taylor birdied 13 to stay within range.

Kim seemingly had the tournament wrapped up when Taylor bogeyed the 17th to fall two shots behind the leader. But Taylor smashed a 315-yard drive on the water-guarded 18th, hit his approach to 18 feet, then fell backward in delight when his birdie putt slipped in the left side of the cup.

Kim, needing a par to win in regulation, hit a fairway wood off the tee but found the right-side fairway bunker, and then put his approach into a greenside bunker before pushing his par putt right of the hole.

South African Charles Schwartzel, in the Masters field based on his top-50 Official World Golf Ranking, and Canadian Graham DeLaet tied for third at 11-under. Schwartzel shot a closing 67, DeLaet a 68. Shaun Micheel, who briefly challenged for the lead, finished with a 7-under 65 for 10-under and solo fifth.

Bryce Molder, a Georgia Tech product and third-round co-leader at 10-under, bogeyed the final hole to finish at 8-under and tied for eighth
